George Beggs Stream Ice December 2013 Ice Formations - Boulder Creek - Boulder County, CO These images are from early December 2013 when we had five days of subzero temperatures. This followed the September 2013 Boulder County "1000 Year Rain" by about twelve weeks. That rain caused flooding that left local mountain streams with an excess of rock, timbers and brush and the extreme cold turned these obstructions into ice dams/jams. An ice dam a short distance downstream caused water to rise above the ice surface, flow over the top a short distance and then disappear in a whirlpool action back under the ice. Over a period of five days the stream ice froze to a thickness of three feet. With rising temperatures ice dams cleared and water flow receded three feet. The pictures capture views of both conditions - water over ice and water under ice. Most of the images are taken from a distance of 10 to 30 feet, looking down at the stream surface from our bridge.
